Questions I've Been Asked

Do we have to exchange rings?
The exchanging of rings is a tradition. It is not required by law. Couples exchange two rings, or one ring or none at all.

Can my parents or my children be my witnesses?
Parents and children, age 18 or older, can be witnesses. They can be two men or two women. Your best man and maid of honor do not have to be your witnesses.

What do you usually wear to the ceremony?
My attire may vary depending on the type of ceremony - formal, casual or beach. I have also worn themed costumes. If this is the case, the couple supplies the costume. I always try to respect the preferences of the couple.

I perform weddings any time of the day and any day of the week provided that I am available. This includes holidays. I have performed weddings at sunrise and at midnight.

Do you have to ask the question "Does anyone object to this marriage taking place"?
No, I do not include this question unless the couple requests that it be included.

Are couples expected to invite you to the reception?
Couples are not expected to invite me to any festivities related to the wedding. If invited to a reception, I generally decline.

Can we write our own ceremony?
Yes, you can write your own ceremony provided you include the legal parts that are required by the Marriage Act of PEI.

Can I get a marriage license in my home province and use it to get married on PEI?
In order to get married legally on PEI, you must obtain a marriage license from PEI. There are number of locations across PEI where you can obtain a license. Usually an appointment is required, both parties must be present and required documents must be presented. There is no blood work required, there is no waiting period after you get your license, and there is no residency requirement. You are issued your license at the appointment provided you have the necessary documents.

Can my children and dog be part of my ceremony?
It is your celebration. If you would like your dog and children involved that is fine with me.

© Across the Island Weddings by Brenda Bulger, Prince Edward Island (PEI) How long is the ceremony?
A basic civil ceremony is about 10 minutes in length. The length of the ceremony can vary depending on how much a couple adds - readings, musical selections, special unity ceremony, etc. Most ceremonies I have performed are about 15 - 20 minutes in length.

Do you give us our marriage certificate?
No, you must apply to Vital Statistics to get your certificate. Usually couples apply to get their marriage certificate when they are at their appointment to obtain their marriage license. The fee for a marriage certificate is $35.00.

What name do I sign on the registry?
You sign the name that is on your marriage license. The registry identifies the people who have gotten married and not what name you go by after the ceremony.

Does a marriage commissioner actually have to be present at the ceremony or can they just sign the papers?
Yes, a marriage commissioner must be present to perform the legal parts of the ceremony.

Do you require a microphone?
The need for a microphone will depend on the number of guests, where the wedding is being held, and if there is interference - i.e. splashing waves, traffic, etc. If a microphone is required, the couple/venue supply the microphone.

How far in advance do we have to book you?
There is no set time. I usually do not take bookings any earlier than a year ahead. Fridays and Saturdays in July and August tend to get booked earlier than other days.

Are we required to take a marriage course?
No - you are not required.
